Silver Amalgam Fillings

A mixture of silver, zinc, tin, mercury, and copper is used in silver amalgam fillings. These fillings are quite durable and can readily last 15 years or more. They are relatively cheap as well.

Many patients, however, do not find the look of silver fillings appealing. Furthermore, the amalgam may also contract or expand, causing fissures in the host tooth.

Gold Fillings

Almost all the teeth in the oral cavity can benefit from gold fillings as it is the most durable form of dental filling currently available. The fact that gold fillings are manufactured in a lab distinguishes them from other forms of dental fillings. They don’t corrode but are quite expensive.

Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are not the most durable dental fillings, but they are tough enough to be utilized for the front teeth. They are made of quartz or silica particles mixed with resin and have a hue and texture that closely resemble the teeth. One more added advantage of these fillings is that they can be used to repair broken teeth.

Ceramic Fillings

Ceramic fillings are a popular choice since they are both aesthetic and durable, but they can be pricey.  Ceramic fillings are made from durable materials and match the color of your natural teeth. They also maintain their color and are stain and abrasion-resistant.  

In addition to being more expensive, they require more of the tooth structure to be removed.

Glass Ionomer Fillings

Glass ionomer cement fillings are manufactured from a mixture of fluoro-aluminosilicate glass and acrylic and are chemically glued to the teeth. They do emit fluoride, but they don't perfectly match the color of natural teeth. 

Glass ionomer fillings last for less than five years on average and since they are much weaker than conventional fillings, they are only utilized for short-term restorations.
